FAQ:

1) Hey, why aren’t you coming to my town? You never come to my town?

1)We pick dates and cities for the tour based on a lot of factors, population, ease of travel, how much mail I get from that area, and if there is a bookstore there who knows how to host an event and has a venue in which to do it. I can really only effectively tour for a month a year, and some would argue that’s too long. We have to hit the most people with the greatest ease of travel. When I was touring in February, we had to cut the Midwest from the tour because of weather, this year, I’m not doing Texas or Florida because we added the Chicago dates. I don’t choose the cities, they are determined from a lot of factors. If you don’t have a at least a dozen best-selling authors coming to your town every year, then you probably don’t have an event-oriented book store.

2)Will you sign other books I bring to the event.

2)My policy is that I will sign any of my books that you bring, but usually I can only personalize one because of time constraints. Most of the stores that host events require that you buy the current book from them. If you’re a collector or reseller, and you have a backpack full of books, you have to wait until last to have your books signed. This tour will have a few ticketed events. Usually the price of the ticket includes a book, or the price of the ticket discounted against the book. I understand that at some of the events they’ll have me sign the books in advance, so if you don’t want to wait in line, you won’t have to, but if you want to wait to have your book personalized or just to say hi, I’ll be there. So far I think Powell’s in Portland may be the only one doing that.

3)What can I expect at the event? Do you read, talk, do puppet shows?

3)I don’t read, but I usually talk about the book and other stuff for about 20-30 minutes, then take your questions for another 20 minutes or so, then I sign books until we’re done. If it’s a big event, and you want your book personalized, it can take an hour or two. Some places allow you to stay in your seat, others, there’s an actual line. It just depends on the venue. If you’re not sure, give them a call beforehand.

I can’t tell you how excited I am that you’re coming to West Chester, PA! Chester County Books & Music is a great indie, too. April’s far away, but it’s definitely something to look forward to.

Boswell is the ex-Downer Avenue location of Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops. You will see a good amount of familiar faces and I think every bookseller under 60 I have is a big fan. The two that are over don’t know what’s good for them.

Yahoo for coming to the greater Chicago area! Even though it would be closer for me to go to Chicago or Naperville, I’ll head up for the Milwaukee stop to show some love to my friend’s bookstore. Can’t wait!

I know Reno is probably somewhere near Arkansas on your list of must-see stops, but I and a few of your other minions in the libraries & bookstores have been steadily flinging your books toward receptive readers for a while now. So if your SF trip ends with an earthquake that flings you eastward…

Hey, I know you’ve got a stop in Milwaukee, but I totally second SaxChuck’s opinion, you should totally drop by in Minneapolis, although anywhere in MN would do. I mean, come on, Wisconsin? They don’t read there, do they?

  • 92 Joel Flores // Feb 10, 2010 at 6:49 pm

Great! The South’s sterling reputation for being a bunch of tobacco chewing, illiterate, uneducated NASCAR watching buffoons has kept yet another scribe from considering a stop into the land of cotton and boiled peanuts for a chat and some insight on his latest work.

Aren’t you due for a day at the beach, Mr. Moore? (Aren’t the one’s in San Diego too crowded?)

  • 93 Joel Flores // Feb 10, 2010 at 7:06 pm

You know what? Screw Charleston, S.C. They don’t deserve your appearance…..however,
Asheville, N.C.! Now there’s a town worth stopping for! Great river kayaking!!! Also great outside Shakespeare theatre!

    Dear Mr. Moore,
I know you hear this ALL the time, but my husband and I truly love your books. We are constantly, anxiously awaiting your next novel. I just wanted to ask why you haven’t returned to Cambria, CA? We currently live in Lemoore, CA which isn’t too long of a drive from Cambria. We love visitng there because it seems so nice and quiet…and there’s wine. We are already planning on driving to San Diego to see you at Mysterious Galaxy, which happens to be a bookstore we loved when we lived there as well! Can’t wait to see you and get a copy of your new book! -Robyn

  • 99 Sally Turner // Feb 15, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I can’t really complain as we caught you in Decatur, GA for Fool (and the book store closed the following week so what does that say????Hmmm??) But as I get older I find that people are not doing exactly as I say so things are not going as smoothly as they should. You couldn’t have released the book a week earlier so I could buy it and take it to my sister who lives in the middle east now could you. The poor dear is going to be deprived until our next meeting in September or thereabouts… Too cruel….Of course if you want to send me a copy…The check will be in the mail…..

Chris! I have recently introduced my younger sister to your fine, fine works. Please, please please make a trip to South Florida. We would love a chance to meet you in person.

Also, my sister was down in the dumps for awhile, I decided she needed a good dose of Biff. You might get a laugh, but we take our books to the lake and I sit and read Lamb out loud to her… We have the special editions, which you know look like Bibles, so I make sure to pause when people walk by… I didn’t want the neighbors to think I’m possessed (talking about sex and saying expletives )while doing what looks like a bible study!

  • 107 Sadie // Feb 24, 2010 at 11:10 am

Your appearance at the Bagdad Theater in Portland will probably sell-out. However, this is a pretty sneaky way of getting people to buy the hardcover edition of your book. I will take a pass but there are plenty of others willing to spend the money.

  • 108 Marin // Feb 24, 2010 at 11:11 am

Awh rats. No LA this round, and the day you’re coming to reasonably close Pasadena is a day I can’t make it up there. Damn LA traffic.

Hopefully I’ll have moved out of this damn town by the time the next book rolls around.

    I miss Kepler’s.

    Bitch. Moan. Whine.

I don’t think I can get up to Phoenix/Mesa on 3/27, but I surely wish I could. I totally LOVED the two books that each had the same scene from a different perspective. I’ve never seen this done before and I consider it to be pure genius – with a healthy dose of silly. Thanks for all your books and I appreciate being informed about upcoming new ones and events.

Even though you haven’t responded to my brilliant (my opinion) suggestion for a book “Homer”, a narration by a broadcaster named Homer on the events of Troy; I will still buy and read your latest book. I will miss you in AZ as I leave there on the 25th (nice timing) but will have my son stalk you in Chicago for a signed copy. Pittsburgh would welcome you on your next tour, we don’t have archaic laws concerning sexual orientation or strigent pot laws so it would be a perfect stop for you in the Spring.
    Thanks for the ride,
    Jack

On behalf of a good percentage of Virginian’s, I apologize for our new asshat governor. I hadn’t heard about that law, but I’m not surprised. Women’s rights are out the door next. Complete asshat, I agree. Please come to Virginia anyway though. We’re not all bad…..

The bit about some of the book signings being pretty lengthy in time, and CM’s policy being signing all books presented to him (I still wonder if he would also sign books from other authors, though) is absolutely true.

I just went to one of these, last year in Denver, and he stayed there signing books for hours. He was really nice when I got to pass him mine, some three hours later, and even answered some special petitions (sign a book insulting a friend) which makes me consider his patience not short Franciscan. In in shoes I would probably have sent everybody to hell, and then burned the join. Thanks Chris!

Naper-fuckin-ville sweeeeeet! Jeez, ya got a lot canadian cryfuckdummies, see what happens when you give a developing nation the Olympics, suddenly they think their frickin Petaluma. (sorry had to throw that in, I went to Sonoma State University, just a dusty beer fart from Petaluma) I promise not to stalk you until you get to Naper-fuckin-ville, and talk about cities that practically mirror each other, with their pretentious little quaint downtown , matching gag, I mean gap stores, and of course a river that no one would be caught in. (at least not alive, I’m pretty sure while I was at SSU,they found a couple of bodies in the river that runs through town) and I know exactly where they found at least one body in the Dupage river that runs right out the turd cutter of downtown Naper-fuckin-ville, not that I had any thing to do with it, really, I just had this dream one night and BAM! three years later they find a body in the smagma filled cesspool they call a “beach” in the tiny hamlet (read that as 164,000 suv drivers_) see ya soon, probably sooner than later, but ya know eventually I will catch up with you, finally a chance to ….. ah fuck it, time to go take my meds, or else they wont let me out of here . leave it to powells to charge for a author signing. next time chris, pick a better bookseller…

  • 139 Dag // Feb 25, 2010 at 8:46 am

@Gene Actually, I think what Powells is doing is brilliant. The ticket price includes the book, and it looks to be a discount off the jacket price (based on the hardback release for Fool, which was 26.99)… also, you’re not going to have as many of the dealer types who aren’t there to buy any books, just get their copy of Stupidest Angel signed (maybe you’re one of them, which is why you’re grumpy??). This is a good thing for Chris, the fans and the store. I would have absolutely no qualms about paying $24 for this if I were local to Powells.

If you have never toured India, maybe you should. I’m living here in an ashram for a couple of years. I think I’m going to be helping teach English to a bunch of high school boys soon. While the ashram is obviously not going to want me having the kids read books with terms like “heinous fuckery”, I can certainly say who my favorite authors are. And most people here actually do speak English, more or less. The local bookstores carry more English titles than they do Hindi. Look into it, anyway.

I’m rather sad at reading this page. Only one or two genuine people happy to read that he has a tour, and the rest of you are complaining that he’s not coming to where you live. shut the hell up, this isn’t your pity party, its a celebration of a brilliant authors newest creation! Chris, hope you have a wonderful tour and that the weathers good. Be careful around the south because the weather has been a bit crazy lately. You should probably have some snow tires or something just in case, but since your probably going to be flying don’t worry about it too much. Other than that, thanks for the new book and I hope to read it soon!

Hooray that there’s a new CM book, and even moreso that it’s a sequel to You Suck, (which happens to be my favorite). I think the people who are complaining about ticket cost from Powells should STFU. First of all, you get a signed book for the same cost as your ticket price, dumbasses. Second, the venue (Bagdad Theater) isn’t even owned by Powell’s, so Bagdad is either giving away the theater space for free, or Powell’s is absorbing it, given that, as I said before, $24 is about the price of a hardcover book. So do not further endorken yourselves to me with your whiining!

  • 183 Mean Bookstore Girl // Mar 24, 2010 at 11:16 am

As Mr. Moore says, he doesn’t get to pick, & I think the fact that he’s hitting sooooo many places just goes to show how much he wants to accomodate his fans!

Also, he’s done his fair share of book-slinging from behind the counter, I do believe, so he’s knows about the book industry from almost every aspect.

That being said, I have to take umbrage with the statement “If you don’t have a at least a dozen best-selling authors coming to your town every year, then you probably don’t have an event-oriented book store.” At least you said “probably!”

I work at an event-oriented bookstore. We have 20+ events every month. We’ve hosted big authors as well as local authors, and everything inbetween.

The big authors are few & far between– not because we can’t host an event, or lack of interest in the community (we had 400 people come out for Danny Bonaduce, of all people, and Anthony Bourdain is coming to town soon) but because of two sad facts:
~1) we’re an Indy bookstore with both a B&N and a Borders less than 10 miles away (they don’t get as many big authors as their brother & sister stores, but they get more than us!)
~and 2) NOBODY likes coming to Bakersfield (it’s hot, it has a wierd mix of literate ambivalence & illiterate passion, the air is HORRIBLE…)

Our town is conveniently between the I-5 and 99 freeways and we’re about two hours from LA, so appearances can easily be made on the way to San Fran from LA, or vice versa. Sometimes, it isn’t about the lack of event-oriented, hard-working bookstores, it is just about the perception of a place.

  • 184 Lindsey W. // Mar 24, 2010 at 2:11 pm

How wonderful that you are touring. I hope to be able to come see you in Pasadena on April 9th. I was so elated to find a new book! I am reading the last one of yours in my collection and was starting to panic. You know how you become attached to authors and then there are no more books left to read on their list? I was introduced to your books not that long ago, and have been so taken with your storytelling. Also very pleased to see you know Carmel and Maui very well. It’s fun to read about places that are familiar haunts. I think Longe’s restaurant has an ‘h’ in the name though (Longhe’s) from Fluke. Anyway, all the best and congratulations on your new book! I should probably have mentioned that we live in Ottawa, very near the funky Mayfair Theatre.

Going to Petaluma on the 15th. Squeezing in the book tour in between a Napa castle tour and a casino on the way back home. Nice road trip. I’ll toast you on my birthday. Continued success!

Thanks for coming to Vroman’s in Pasadena. We all had a great time listening to and seeing you. You have a truly, beautifully bizarre mind, which we appreciate muchly. So, how ever did you come up with the idea for “whaley boys” anyway? Did you see a homeless man on the streets of San Francisco with a sign about his absolutely humongous whaley boy?

So pumped that you’re coming to Ontario! Your books have been the gifts I give for Christmas for years! See ya next week!

  • 204 Becky // Apr 12, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I am SO excited you are coming to Waterloo! Your books got me through my English Literature degree! See you in K-W!

    Chris,

Consider this one moore (sic) for Austin, Texas. I understand time constraints, and it seems you use good methods to determine how you make your tours. That makes this whole thing slightly less fulfilling, but I did manage to pick up a signed first edition (That I promptly damaged so no one would steal) from book people, so I will have to take that as some consolation. From this point on I vow to write you so much mail your poor location selecting algorithm has no choice but to spit out ATX.

I am so glad you will be in Corte Madera at Book Passage, and Copperfields in Petaluma, it will be a double opportunity and that you are so close and then right in my home town is the best birthday present ever!

Thank you again for coming to Portland. Wasn’t the Bagdad Theater the coolest place ever for a CM event? And not just for the beer. You made my YEAR by recognizing me from previous signings in Portland. I might be your Portland stalker, but not in a scary, I want to hold you captive in my basement until you write a sequel to A Dirty Job sorta way. Altho I really want to read about how Rivera deals with his new career!

  • 209 The One Who Wanted to Have Your Babies // Apr 14, 2010 at 7:41 pm

    Dear Mr. Moore,

I met you in San Diego. Unfortunately, my snarky boyfriend thought it would be oh-so-hilarious to tell your “handler” that I wanted to have your babies. Which was true. In a purely admirational sense. I appreciate that you didn’t kick me out immediately on grounds of fanaticism. But in retrospect, it seems a little extreme to eject a mute girl from the party, as I found myself mostly unable to speak during our brief meeting. I will say, however that I excelled with MENSA-like excellence at the smile/nod/giggle.

I didn’t get a chance to say it at the time (due to the aforementioned lack of speech), but I was moving back to Michigan on Sunday, and I had planned on leaving Saturday morning from California until I saw your tour dates in San Diego. Thanks for a lovely parting gift. Your advice about rewriting and finishing my novel will undoubtably prove invaluable. If I can get past chapter three.

Thanks again, and keep the brilliant words coming.

    Future Brilliant Novelist. Maybe.

I just wanted to thank you for visiting us “North” Americans. It was a great birthday present for me to get you to come to my hometown. Awesome. Just though you should know that making trips to these smaller venues is worth it. We love you in Canada. Please keep on writing – want to hear that Rivera story!

I really wish you would come to Texas!

  • 212 Michelle // Jun 21, 2010 at 6:22 am

Please come to North Carolina! I adore your books!

I too vote for NC. Asheville is welcoming and has replaced sedona as the vortex of the universe. Tom Robbins came to Sylva and 500 people showed up. We have moonshine, crunchy buds and beutifull women. You can’t throw a crystal without hittin a homosexual massage therapist with a trust fund

There is a HUGE following of your work Mr. Moore here in Long Beach, CA. Bring the Book Tour down here. =P

Other places want you, but Oklahoma is 99.9 % dull, so we NEED you. North Texas would also be OK.

Please come to Madison!!! Please please please!!!

so i read 2 books throughout grade school…ok maybe it was 1…thank god (take offense) for Cliff Notes. anywho, a friend who shall remain nameless recommended a Moore novel in lieu of my mindless reading of car magazines. so i figure why not…a bunch of pieces of paper with a dog (coyote dingo whatever) on the cover indulging in one of my less healthy hobbies is worth a shot right? (and the requisite cigarette)….talk about life altering experiences. maybe it was my public school education. or general lack of interest of any publication with no pictures but thank you thank you thank you Mr. Moore for showing me that the written word can be coaxed into wonderful things whose only boundaries are whatever the eff you want them to be. keep up the beautifully twisted work. -an unexpected fan

  • 218 Island boy // Nov 6, 2010 at 7:00 pm

I’m a P.E.I. boy (aged 62) working in Saskatoon. I’ve read only 3 of your books but have narrated them to my co-workers chapter by chapter after they’ve listened to me LOL in the lunch room.
Keep up the excellent word smithing.
